Beverly Hills Supports Regional Efforts to Help Homeless City Seeks Volunteers to Provide Assistance
Beverly Hills, CA – Beverly Hills is joining with other Westside cities in support of regional solutions to the problem of homelessness. The City’s Human Services Division is partnering with local non-profit agencies to promote volunteer activities and contributions, as well assisting with longer-term strategies to provide services to the homeless that lead to permanent housing.
Beverly Hills has contracted with Step Up on Second to create the Changing Lives and Sharing Places (CLASP) program, which addresses conditions affecting the quality of life for the homeless in our community. The CLASP outreach team meets on a regular basis with the homeless to make contact and offer services. The City is also promoting efforts to help the homeless as winter approaches through volunteer activities and contributions from the local community for the Westside Shelter Program.
“Beverly Hills is taking a proactive approach to the problem of homelessness by working with neighboring cities and non-profit agencies to end homelessness in our region,” said Yar Meshkaty, Chair of the Human Relations Commission. “Communities struggle to balance the quality of life expected by local residents with the dignity of the homeless. We want our efforts to be supportive rather than punitive by focusing on social services rather than police action,” he added.

BEVERLY HILLS TESTS EMERGENCY RESPONSE SYSTEMS City Joins Over 5 Million Participants in Great Southern California ShakeOut Beverly Hills, CA – The City of Beverly Hills tested its emergency response systems in the Great Southern California ShakeOut, the largest earthquake drill in U.S. history. The ShakeOut portrayed what could happen in a 7.8 magnitude earthquake on the southern end of the San Andreas fault. City staff participated in the Drop, Cover and Hold On exercise at 10a.m., and then conducted a variety of other disaster-related activities throughout the day.
“The preparation that we do in advance to prepare for a disaster will minimize the potentially catastrophic impacts a large-scale event could have on our community,” said Pamela Mottice- Muller, Director of Emergency Management for the City of Beverly Hills. “Should a major disaster occur, emergency service workers may be overwhelmed with response demands. People need to be prepared and self-sufficient to reduce chance of injuries and even save lives,” she continued.

For Immediate Release November 6, 2008 Contact: Cheryl Burnett (310) 285-2454
The New Year Will Bring New Caliber of Service to Beverly Hills Pets
Beverly Hills, CA – In early 2009, Beverly Hills residents will be provided with closer proximity to a new, state-of-the art animal shelter located in West Los Angeles. Operated by the City of Los Angeles, this new facility will enable Beverly Hills residents to locate missing pets quickly, while receiving a variety of animal care services.
Currently Beverly Hills residents must travel to the County animal shelter in Carson, California to retrieve a lost pet. In early 2009, residents will be able to be reunited with their animal at the West Los Angeles facility, located just four miles from Beverly Hills at 11361 West Pico Boulevard. This new facility will provide Beverly Hills residents with services such as animal adoption, treatment and reuniting services in the event they lose or seek a pet.
The Beverly Hills City Council and the Los Angeles City Council have both adopted measures in 2008 to enter into this contractual arrangement to improve services offered to Beverly Hills residents – and their pets. The item will be presented to the Beverly Hills City Council on December 2, 2008.
