Homes Go Green in Beverly Hills City Council approves green program for single family residences
Beverly Hills, CA – The Beverly Hills City Council adopted a voluntary residential green building program for single-family residences, incorporating aggressive environmental building techniques into the design, construction and maintenance of new homes and those undergoing a greater than 50% remodel or addition. This green residential program complements the City’s recently passed Green Building Ordinance which mandated a series of requirements for commercial and multi-family developments.
The green residential program is a voluntary initiative and provides incentives to encourage homeowners to be part of the City’s efforts to promote environmental sustainability. The City’s program goes beyond the 2010 State of California green building requirements, yet uses existing industry standards in its point system. Under the program, projects are rated on water use, energy efficiency, indoor air quality, materials, and site design.
The City’s program will be tiered to two levels of incentives, including expedited plan review and permit processing, and priority inspection scheduling. Homeowners will achieve lower construction costs by reducing timelines for acquiring project development approval from the City. Additional cost and time savings will realized by applicants administering the program directly through City staff rather than a third party organization. Annual design awards will be issued by the City to promote environmentally healthy and community-enhancing designs.
“This green residential program is among the most progressive in California,” said Mayor Barry Brucker. “Coupled with the green commercial building ordinance we passed a few months ago, Beverly Hills is leading the way in reducing our carbon footprint. This program provides incentives to entice homeowners to participate in and feel like they are making a difference in improving the environmental quality of our community. It also complements the other green initiatives the City has underway to reduce waste, conserve energy and promote the health and well-being of residents, workers and visitors to Beverly Hills,” he continued.
More information about green building and other green initiatives in Beverly Hills can be found on the City’s website at www.beverlyhills.org.

THE BEVERLY HILLS PUBLIC LIBRARY PRESENTS “SOMETIMES A BOOK IS MORE THAN A BOOK” – AN EXHIBITION OF ARTISTS’ BOOKS
BEVERLY HILLS, CA – The Beverly Hills Public Library invites you to view one of their latest collections entitled Sometimes a Book is More Than a Book – an Exhibition of Artists’ Books which is on display now through October 6, 2008. Located in the lobby of the library, this exhibition features more than twenty books from the library’s collection of more than 200 artists’ books. The collection began in 1974 under the direction of art librarian Nicholas Cellini, with the support of the Friends of the Beverly Hills Library.
During the 1950’s many artists were active in printmaking, graphic design and concrete poetry and begin to create books reflecting theses interests. And, by the early 1960’s a small group of artists began to move from literary sources to books as a whole and thus the concept of the artists’ book was born.
Some of the items on display include works from an early pioneer of the movement and conceptual artist, Edward Ruscha, who created books that are simply collections of related objects, which is exemplified in Nine Swimming Pools and a Broken Glass. And in Spiral Bound, artist Steven Nossan cuts the edge of a spiral notebook in a curve, which allows the open book and its content to become a sphere with no beginning or end. Come explore and enjoy these and many other great works. |
